I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH), so I wrote a blog post to explain it!

Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) is a modern therapeutic method that combines the principles of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) with the natural, trance-like state of hypnosis. Unlike traditional therapies that dig into the past to resolve deep-seated issues, SFH focuses on the present and future. It helps clients identify and achieve their desired outcomes by tapping into the power of their subconscious mind.

At the core of SFH is the belief in your power, as the client, to drive your own change. We all possess inner resources and strengths that can catalyze positive life changes. As a therapist, my role is not to dictate or solve your problems but to guide you in effectively recognizing and utilizing these resources. This approach is inherently optimistic and empowering, fostering a sense of hope, resilience, and self-confidence in you.

During an SFH session, we discuss your goals, focusing on what you want to achieve rather than dwelling on problems. This conversation involves solution-focused questions designed to help you envision your desired future and identify small, achievable steps. For example, I might ask, “What specific changes will you notice when you achieve your goal?” or “Can you recall a time when you successfully handled a similar situation?” These questions encourage you to focus on a future where your problem is no longer the centre of attention.

After our discussion, I guide you into a gentle, positive hypnosis, a relaxed yet highly focused state of mind. In this trance-like state, your subconscious mind becomes more open to positive suggestions and imagery. During this time, I reinforce your goals, instil confidence, and encourage your subconscious to support the desired changes.

SFH is effective for a wide range of issues, including sleep issues, stress, anxiety, depression, phobias, weight management, perimenopause, childbirth, and more. Its effectiveness comes from its forward-looking approach and hypnosis to bypass conscious resistance, making adopting new, healthier behaviours and thought patterns easier.

What I find truly inspiring about Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy is its pragmatic and positive approach to personal development and mental health. By accentuating solutions and harnessing the power of the subconscious mind, SFH enables individuals to create meaningful and lasting changes, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Often, when clients reach out to me, they are seeking an alternative treatment that doesn’t involve revisiting the issues causing them anxiety and stress. They feel burdened by repetitive thought patterns and behaviours. The beauty of SFH is that through gentle, positive, forward-thinking techniques, thoughts and behaviours transform, and clients begin to feel like themselves again, but with renewed vitality.
