IBS

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) affects up to 1 in 20 people in their lives in the UK and 2 thirds of those are women.

IBS is a condition that affects communication between the gut and the brain – the gut-brain axis. These two organs constantly exchange information through the gut-brain axis. For example, when you’re hungry, your gut signals your brain, and when you have nerves, stress or anxiety, your brain signals your gut. However, in people with IBS, their gut is hyper-reactive, which can lead to an excessive exchange of information between the two organs.

IBS is characterized by a range of symptoms such as abdominal discomfort or pain, diarrhoea, constipation, or a combination of both. While about one-third of IBS patients experience constipation, another third suffer from diarrhoea, and the remaining individuals don’t fit into a specific pattern. Additionally, bloating and urgency are also common symptoms. This condition is more prevalent in women than men and can affect people of all ethnic backgrounds.

Hypnotherapy for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is recommended by the NICE guidelines (National Institute for Clinical Excellence), with it acknowledgement that all psychological interventions are effective in its management.

Quite often those of us who suffer from IBS will find that it is worse when we are stressed, have increased anxiety or upset in our lives.

Hypnotherapy helps reduce this anxiety and stress and in turn, can reduce the episodes of IBS and provide coping mechanisms for you when you are experiencing discomfort and IBS symptoms.
