Pain
With almost half of UK adults experiencing chronic pain the NHS’s current advice is medication and exercise. However, many people are reluctant to take drugs or unable to do so because of undesirable side effects and seek alternative methods to help with the additional symptoms they may be experiencing, such as anxiety, stress, sleep disturbances and mood changes.
Research has also shown that Psychological Therapies can help people cope better, especially when it can exacerbate or create anxiety, stress, add to mental health issues and cause sleep disturbances which leads to a vicious cycle.
Pain can be physical, mental and emotional. It can be derived from any sort of trauma. Physical or Psychological.
Any pain can lead to a decrease in our happy hormone (Serotonin) and make us feel low and this is where Hypnotherapy can be beneficial.
Similarly the body can have physical symptoms to stress:
- The pain almost anywhere in your body
- Muscle fatigue/aches
- Migraines and headaches
- Tingling
- Numbness
- IBS and Bladder problems
- Overly sensitive to hot/cold
There is also evidence which shows the benefits of Hypnotherapy in relieving the symptoms of Fibromyalgia (Picard et al 2013). The group who received Hypnotherapy showed a decrease in pain perception, increased quality in sleep, an increase in their general well being and an increase in their global assessment of change.
How I help is through reframing your thought processes. I help you to think differently about your pain, reduce the anxiety it creates, so you find it easier to relax, reduce the stress perhaps it creates and sleep better.
In turn, this makes it easier to focus on the good things in life and set small goals you would like to achieve which leads to you breaking the pain – stress cycle.
These small goals aim to increase your Serotonin and naturally boost your own endorphins (painkillers).
When you have more Serotonin, you find it easier to cope with life, fear and pain, and are generally more positive about what the day brings.
