Hypnotherapy for Misophonia
Misophonia can affect many areas of your life. Everyday sounds that other people barely notice may trigger an intense emotional or physical response, making meals, work, social situations and even time with the people you love feel increasingly difficult.
Stress and anxiety can make these reactions feel even stronger. You may also begin worrying in advance about encountering a particular sound, creating a cycle of anticipation, tension and increased sensitivity.
How I Work with Misophonia
My approach is to help reduce the stress and anxiety surrounding misophonia rather than repeatedly focusing on the sounds themselves.
This may sound unusual, particularly if what you really want is for me to hypnotise you so that certain noises no longer bother you. However, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy does not work by simply switching off your response to a particular sound.
Instead, we work together to reduce your overall anxiety, help you feel more in control, and encourage your attention to move toward the parts of your life that feel positive, manageable, and enjoyable.
When the brain is already stressed, it can become more alert to potential problems. You may find yourself listening for a trigger sound before it happens or becoming increasingly focused on the possibility of hearing it. This anticipation can add to your anxiety and make the eventual reaction feel even more intense.
By reducing stress and shifting where your attention goes, the aim is to help those sounds feel less dominant in your everyday life.
What Happens During a Session?
Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy combines psychotherapy with hypnosis.
We begin each session with talking therapy. Rather than spending the session repeatedly examining the problem, I will encourage you to notice what has been going well and what feels even slightly better or more manageable.
We will also talk about how you would like things to be and identify small, realistic steps towards your preferred future. This helps your brain begin focusing on positive possibilities instead of constantly anticipating situations that may feel irritating or stressful.
The hypnosis follows the talking part of the session. Hypnosis is a calm, focused state of attention in which you can relax while your mind processes the positive ideas and changes discussed during the session.
Helping Misophonia Feel Less Dominant
The aim is not to dismiss the sounds or suggest that you should ignore them. Your reaction is real, and I understand how disruptive and distressing it can feel.
Our work focuses on helping you feel calmer, less overwhelmed and better able to direct your attention. As your general stress and anxiety reduce, you may find that you spend less time monitoring for sounds, anticipating triggers or becoming completely absorbed by them.
This can help misophonia take up less space in your life, so you can feel more comfortable and start enjoying the people, places, and experiences that matter to you.
